7 signals that catch 90% of fake Indian influencer followers
27% of Indian Instagram creators have above-threshold fake followers, per our 43K profile audit. Here are the 7 signals our classifier uses to catch them — all of which you can check in under 90 seconds per profile.
1. Engagement-to-follower ratio below 1%
Average their last 12 posts. (likes + comments) ÷ followers × 100. Real micro: 3-7%. Real mega: 0.4-1.5%. Anything under 1% on a 50K account is suspicious.
2. Comment-to-like ratio under 0.4%
Real engaged audiences comment. Comments ÷ likes × 100 should be 0.8-3% for organic micro creators. Bots like, they don't comment.
3. Comments mostly under 10 characters or emoji-only
Open the last 5 posts. If most comments are 'nice', '🔥🔥', or single emojis, the engagement is bot-driven. Real fans write sentences.
4. Follower spikes of more than 50K in a single day
Use SocialBlade or similar. Organic growth is gradual. A vertical line on the growth chart = bought followers, brand panic, or viral moment (verify which).
5. Geographic distribution mismatch
Indian creator with 60% of followers from Brazil, Pakistan, or Indonesia = bot farms in those countries. Most legit Indian micro accounts have 70%+ Indian followers.
6. Engagement decay vs reach disconnect
Take 10 posts. If reach varies 10× across them but engagement ratio stays flat, the engagement is artificial. Real audiences engage proportionally with what they see.
7. Zero cross-platform presence
Real creators with 100K+ followers usually have at least a YouTube or LinkedIn presence too. Account exclusively on one platform with massive following + no off-platform footprint = high fraud risk.
The 3-of-7 rule
Our classifier hits 94% accuracy vs manual audit using this rule: if 3 or more of the 7 signals fire, the account is likely (>85% confidence) inauthentic. If 5 or more fire, almost certainly fraud. Walk away. The 800 rupees they spent on bots isn't worth your campaign budget.
Automate this
Manual checks work for 5 creators. Past that, you need automation. Dexfluence runs all 7 signals + 12 more on every creator in our 136K dataset, scoring them weekly. Anything we shortlist for you is pre-vetted.
